Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

Overview

Levels 20–50 · Elemental Shaman, solo questing and grinding.

Elemental kills with Lightning Bolt, Flame Shock and Earth Shock from range, then finishes in melee when the mana runs low. Classic guides warn that it drinks more than Enhancement, and that is still true, but the Forever tree gives it much better tools than Classic had. Lightning Overload makes some Lightning Bolts cast a free half-damage copy, Elemental Alacrity shortens Lightning Bolt’s cast time, and Lava Burst is a new capstone nuke that hits harder on targets with Flame Shock. Eye of the Storm stops melee hits from pushing back your casts. The guide covers levels 20–50, where this build is strongest; at 50 you can keep going or respec into Enhancement for the long 50s.

Why this build

  • Kills before contact: most mobs die to Flame Shock, Lava Burst and a couple of Lightning Bolts on the way in.
  • Big crits: Elemental Fury doubles your spell crit bonus, and Call of Thunder adds crit to Lightning Bolt.
  • Casts through hits: Eye of the Storm reduces pushback on Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst by 69%.
  • Easy group role: the same build is strong ranged damage in dungeons.

Weak spots

  • Mana: you drink more often than any other Shaman spec; Convection and Elemental Focus only reduce it.
  • Fragile in melee: mail armor and a shield help, but multiple mobs on you are dangerous.
  • Build ends at 50: past that, Enhancement usually levels faster in the dense late zones.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10 to 50. The talent tree above shows the finished level 50 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–14 · Convection 5/5 — Shocks, Lightning Bolt, Lava Burst and Chain Lightning cost 10% less mana.
  • Levels 15–17 · Call of Flame 3/3 — +15% damage on Fire totems, Flame Shock, Fire Nova and Lava Burst.
  • Levels 18–19 · Concussion 2/5 — +5% damage on Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Earth Shock at 5/5.
  • Level 20 · Elemental Focus 1/1 — 10% chance after a damage spell for your next damage spell to cost no mana.
  • Levels 21–25 · Elemental Fury 5/5 — Doubles the crit bonus of your Fire, Frost and Nature spells and fire totems.
  • Level 26 · Call of Thunder 1/1 — +3% crit chance on Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning.
  • Levels 27–29 · Concussion 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 30–32 · Lightning Overload 3/3 — 9% chance for Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning to cast a free half-damage copy.
  • Levels 33–34 · Eye of the Storm 2/3 — 69% less pushback on Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst.
  • Levels 35–37 · Elemental Alacrity 3/3 — Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst cast 0.51 sec faster.
  • Level 38 · Eye of the Storm 3/3 — finish the talent.
  • Level 39 · Reverberation 1/5 — Shorter shock cooldowns: up to 1 sec at 5/5.
  • Level 40 · Lava Burst 1/1 — Fire nuke that deals 20% more damage if your Flame Shock is on the target.
  • Levels 41–45 · Thundering Strikes (Enhancement) 5/5 — +5% crit with spells and attacks.
  • Levels 46–48 · Reverberation 4/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 49–50 · Elemental Reach 2/2 — +6 yards on Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst, and +16 yards on Flame Shock.

Key levels

  • Level 14 · Convection 5/5: shocks and Lightning Bolt cost 10% less mana.
  • Level 20 · Elemental Focus: a chance for a free next damage spell, and Frost Shock from the trainer.
  • Level 25 · Elemental Fury 5/5: double crit bonus on Fire, Frost and Nature spells.
  • Level 32 · Lightning Overload 3/3: Lightning Bolt can cast a free half-damage copy.
  • Level 37 · Elemental Alacrity 3/3: Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst cast about half a second faster.
  • Level 40 · Lava Burst: your opener after Flame Shock.
  • Level 45 · Thundering Strikes 5/5: +5% crit on spells and melee.

How to pull and kill

  1. Pull with Flame Shock from maximum range (Elemental Reach adds 16 yards to it), then Lava Burst while the burn is on the mob.
  2. Keep casting Lightning Bolt as the mob runs in. Earth Shock or Frost Shock finishes it or stops it at the last moment.
  3. If it reaches you, drop Stoneclaw or Earthbind Totem and step back, or finish it in melee with Rockbiter or Flametongue Weapon to save mana.
  4. When Elemental Focus gives Clearcasting, spend it on your most expensive spell: Chain Lightning (level 32 in Classic) or Lava Burst.
  5. Two mobs: Earthbind Totem, Flame Shock both, then Chain Lightning. Heal with Healing Wave once they are dead.

Leveling tips

  • Gear: Intellect and spell damage items, and a shield for armor. Mail armor is fine; do not skip it for cloth.
  • Drink efficiently: a lot of your downtime is mana, so buy water in bulk and use Mana Spring Totem (level 26 in Classic) while you drink.
  • Melee finishing: keep a decent one-handed weapon with a weapon enchant; hitting a nearly dead mob costs no mana.
  • Totems: Searing Totem adds free damage before the mob arrives; Call of Flame makes it hit 15% harder.
  • Zones: Hillsbrad Foothills and Ashenvale in the 20s, Arathi Highlands, Desolace and Stranglethorn Vale in the 30s, Tanaris, Feralas and the Hinterlands in the 40s.
  • Dungeons: Scarlet Monastery Library (34–40) and Zul’Farrak (45–51) have many caster-friendly packs.

After level 50

At 50, either finish Elemental with Elemental Warding and more Enhancement points, or respec using the Enhancement Shaman leveling guide for the rest of the way to 60.
