Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.
Overview
Levels 20–50 · Marksmanship Hunter, solo questing and grinding.
The Classic guides are honest about Marksmanship: it levels more slowly than Beast Mastery because your pet still tanks but hits less hard, while your own shots carry the damage. The trade-off is that you grow into the build you will play at 60 and in dungeons, without a respec later. The WoW Forever Marksmanship tree is much more useful while leveling than the Classic one. Careful Aim turns Intellect into attack power, Rapid Killing shortens Rapid Fire and boosts your next shot after every kill, Rapid Recuperation keeps mana flowing, and Sniper Shot gives a big opener. This guide covers 20 to 50, the levels where Multi-Shot, Aspect of the Cheetah and the new shot talents come together. The only non-Marksmanship points are the first five in Deadly Aspects.
Why this build
- Strong burst on your own. Mortal Shots, Barrage and Sniper Shot make mobs die fast even when the pet loses threat.
- Mana under control. Efficiency, Rapid Killing and Rapid Recuperation fix the mana problems that slowed Classic Marksmanship.
- Kill-chaining. Rapid Killing’s bonus after every kill rewards pulling the next mob right away.
- Ready for groups. Trueshot Aura helps every party member with ranged attacks, and you do not need a respec for dungeons.
Weak spots
- The pet holds threat less well because you out-damage it. Let it build threat for a moment before opening with big shots.
- Slower than Beast Mastery on long solo sessions, as the Classic guides point out.
- Dead zone and melee. Mobs that reach you hurt; Scatter Shot is not in this build, so rely on Wing Clip, Concussive Shot and Freezing Trap.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10 to 50. The talent tree above shows the finished level 50 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Deadly Aspects (Beast Mastery) 5/5 — Aspect of the Hawk shots get a 10% chance for 150% faster ranged attacks: the strongest early damage talent in any Hunter tree.
- Levels 15–19 · Careful Aim 5/5 — Attack power equal to your Intellect at five points, so every Intellect item raises your shot damage.
- Levels 20–24 · Efficiency 5/5 — Up to 15% cheaper shots, stings and melee abilities: the fix for Marksmanship’s mana problem.
- Levels 25–29 · Lethal Attacks 5/5 — +5% critical strike chance with all attacks. Five points unlock Mortal Shots.
- Levels 30–31 · Rapid Killing 2/2 — 2 min shorter Rapid Fire cooldown, and 20% more damage on your next shot after a kill or a Serpent Sting death.
- Level 32 · Trueshot Aura 1/1 — +30 ranged attack power for you and party members within 45 yards. Required for Sniper Shot.
- Levels 33–37 · Mortal Shots 5/5 — +30% critical strike damage bonus on ranged abilities.
- Levels 38–39 · Rapid Recuperation 2/2 — Serpent Sting hits and consumed Rapid Killing bonuses let your mana regeneration continue while casting for 30 sec.
- Levels 40–42 · Barrage 3/3 — +9% damage on Multi-Shot, Aimed Shot and Volley.
- Levels 43–47 · Ranged Weapon Specialization 5/5 — +5% ranged weapon damage.
- Level 48 · Sniper Shot 1/1 — A steady shot that adds 160 ranged damage: open every fight with it.
- Levels 49–50 · Improved Stings 2/3 — More Serpent Sting damage, shorter Viper Sting cooldown and longer Scorpid Sting.
Key levels
- Level 18 · Multi-Shot from the trainer: your extra shot for two-mob pulls.
- Level 20 · Aspect of the Cheetah and Freezing Trap. Efficiency starts cutting shot costs.
- Level 26 · Rapid Fire from the trainer; Rapid Killing at 30–31 shortens its cooldown.
- Level 32 · Trueshot Aura: ranged attack power for you and your party.
- Level 37 · Mortal Shots complete: bigger ranged critical strikes.
- Level 40 · Mail armor and your mount; Barrage starts boosting Multi-Shot.
- Level 48 · Sniper Shot: a big opener that adds 160 ranged damage.
How to pull and kill
- Pet first, then Hunter’s Mark. Give the pet a couple of seconds of threat before your big shots.
- Open with Sniper Shot (48) or Arcane Shot, then Serpent Sting and Auto Shot. Serpent Sting also triggers Rapid Recuperation for mana.
- Finish mobs quickly so Rapid Killing’s 20% bonus is ready for the next target, and pull the next mob while it lasts.
- Two mobs: Freezing Trap one before the pull, or Multi-Shot both while the pet holds the first one.
- Rapid Fire on elites and dangerous pulls; with Rapid Killing it is available almost every few pulls.
- A mob on you: Concussive Shot and walk away, or Wing Clip and step back to range. Feign Death from 30 resets a bad pull.
Leveling tips
- Stack Agility and Intellect. Careful Aim makes Intellect add attack power, so leather and mail with both are ideal.
- Your bow or gun is everything. Marksmanship damage comes from the ranged weapon; upgrade it before anything else.
- Engineering gives scopes and guns that fit this build perfectly, and pairs with Mining for materials.
- Choose a sturdy pet. A boar or bear holds threat against your burst better than a cat.
- Zones: Wetlands, Hillsbrad and Stonetalon for 20–30, Arathi Highlands, Desolace and Stranglethorn Vale for 30–40, Tanaris, Feralas and the Hinterlands for 40–50.
- Dungeons: Shadowfang Keep (23–29), the Scarlet Monastery wings (31–45), Uldaman (44–50) and Zul’Farrak (45–51) all suit a ranged damage dealer.
- Buy ammo in bulk and keep your quiver full; Marksmanship uses more shots per fight than Beast Mastery.
After level 50
At 50, keep going in Marksmanship with Improved Arcane Shot, Hawk Eye and the rest of Improved Stings for a strong dungeon and raid build at 60. If solo leveling feels too slow, respec into the Beast Mastery Hunter leveling guide for Bestial Wrath and the last ten levels.
