Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.
Overview
Levels 10–60 · Combat Rogue, solo questing and grinding.
This is the classic sword Rogue that most Classic guides recommend for questing, rebuilt for the Forever Combat tree. The old Sword Specialization is gone; its job is now done by Hack and Slash, which gives swords (and axes) a chance for an extra attack. You fight face to face with a sword in each hand, spam Sinister Strike, and spend combo points on Eviscerate or Slice and Dice. Deflection, Riposte and Endurance keep you alive when a pull goes wrong, and Restless Blades turns every finishing move into shorter Evasion, Sprint and Vanish cooldowns. After Adrenaline Rush the build moves into Assassination for crit and energy refunds.
Why this build
- No setup needed: Sinister Strike works from any angle, so you never have to get behind a questing mob.
- Two panic buttons on short timers: Endurance cuts Sprint and Evasion cooldowns by 60%, and Restless Blades shortens them further with every Eviscerate.
- Burst for tough pulls: Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush together kill two mobs in the time one normally takes.
- Gear friendly: any decent sword works; you are not waiting for a slow, high-damage dagger drop.
Weak spots
- Little control until level 30: before Kidney Shot you depend on Gouge, Evasion and bandages.
- Relentless Strikes comes late (51): energy starvation is noticeable in the 40s on long fights.
- Weak to casters: Kick and a line-of-sight pull are your only answer to a mob that keeps casting.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10 to 60. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–11 · Improved Sinister Strike 2/2 — Sinister Strike costs 5 less Energy, so you press it more often.
- Levels 12–13 · Remorseless Attacks (Assassination) 2/2 — After a kill, your next Sinister Strike has up to 40% more crit chance: great for chain pulling.
- Levels 14–16 · Improved Eviscerate 3/3 — +21% Eviscerate damage, your main finisher all the way to 60.
- Levels 17–19 · Deflection 3/3 — +6% Parry, and required for Riposte.
- Levels 20–22 · Precision 3/3 — +3% hit with attacks and poisons; dual wielding misses a lot without it.
- Level 23 · Riposte 1/1 — Free 150% weapon damage strike after a parry that also disarms the mob for 6 sec.
- Levels 24–25 · Endurance 2/2 — Sprint and Evasion cooldowns 60% shorter: your escape and your emergency defence come back fast.
- Level 26 · Lightning Reflexes 1/5 — Filler point for +1% Dodge to open the next row.
- Levels 27–31 · Dual Wield Specialization 5/5 — +25% off-hand damage.
- Level 32 · Blade Flurry 1/1 — 15 sec of 20% faster attacks that also hit a second mob.
- Levels 33–37 · Hack and Slash 5/5 — With swords, a 5% chance on each hit for an extra attack. This replaces Classic’s Sword Specialization.
- Levels 38–40 · Aggression 3/3 — +6% Sinister Strike and Eviscerate damage.
- Level 41 · Restless Blades 1/1 — Damaging finishers take 2 sec per combo point off Adrenaline Rush, Blade Flurry, Evasion, Sprint and Vanish.
- Level 42 · Adrenaline Rush 1/1 — Doubles Energy regeneration for 15 sec.
- Levels 43–47 · Malice (Assassination) 5/5 — +5% crit with attacks and poisons.
- Levels 48–50 · Ruthlessness (Assassination) 3/3 — Finishers have a 60% chance to leave a combo point for the next one.
- Level 51 · Relentless Strikes (Assassination) 1/1 — Finishers have a 20% chance per combo point to restore 25 Energy.
- Levels 52–56 · Lethality (Assassination) 5/5 — +30% critical strike damage bonus on Sinister Strike.
- Levels 57–58 · Murder (Assassination) 2/2 — +4% damage against Humanoids and Giants, the most common quest targets.
- Levels 59–60 · Weapon Expertise 2/2 — 2% fewer dodged and parried attacks, which matters against mobs of your level and higher.
Key levels
- Level 10 · Improved Sinister Strike makes your filler 5 Energy cheaper; train Slice and Dice and Sprint.
- Level 20 · Precision 3/3 fixes most of your misses. Do the Rogue poison quest and put Instant Poison on both swords.
- Level 27 · Dual Wield Specialization starts: the off-hand sword finally pulls its weight.
- Level 32 · Blade Flurry: pull two mobs on purpose and kill both at once.
- Level 37 · Hack and Slash 5/5 with two swords: steady extra attacks on every swing.
- Level 42 · Adrenaline Rush doubles Energy regeneration for 15 sec; use it with Blade Flurry.
- Level 51 · Relentless Strikes: finish at 5 combo points to get Energy back.
- Level 56 · Lethality 5/5: Sinister Strike crits hit much harder with Malice’s extra crit.
How to pull and kill
- Pull with a thrown weapon or bow and let the mob come to you, or open from Stealth with Cheap Shot once you have it (level 26 in Classic).
- Sinister Strike to 2 combo points, then Slice and Dice; on short fights skip it and go straight to 5-point Eviscerate.
- If the mob is still healthy, spend the next 5 points on a longer Slice and Dice or a second Eviscerate, not on Rupture.
- When a second mob joins, press Blade Flurry and stay between both mobs. Save Adrenaline Rush for a third add or an elite.
- Losing badly: Evasion first, then Gouge and bandage, then Vanish or Sprint away. Endurance means they are back quickly.
Leveling tips
- Weapons: put the slower sword in the main hand for bigger Sinister Strikes and the faster one in the off hand for more Hack and Slash procs and poison hits.
- Poisons: Instant Poison on both weapons while leveling; Crippling Poison on the off hand is worth it against runners and on PvP realms.
- Bandages: First Aid is your healing. Keep it at the highest bandage for your level and use Gouge to buy the 8 seconds.
- Food: eat after every other fight instead of waiting for Health to regenerate; Rogue downtime is all Health.
- Zones: Westfall or the Barrens to 20, Duskwood or Ashenvale to 30, Stranglethorn Vale to 40, Tanaris and Feralas to 50, then Un’Goro Crater and the Plaguelands.
- Dungeons: the build is also a fine party damage dealer, for example The Deadmines (18–24) or Scarlet Monastery Armory (37–43).
After level 60
At 60 this is already a good dungeon and raid Combat build. Swap the Murder points into Improved Slice and Dice if most of your targets are not Humanoids or Giants, and move Lightning Reflexes into Improved Sprint for PvP.
