Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

Overview

Levels 10–40 · Fire Mage, solo questing and grinding.

Fire kills single mobs faster than any other mage spec, at the cost of control and mana. You open with a big cast, let crits roll Ignite on the target and finish with instant Fire Blast before the mob does much damage. The talent path follows the classic Fire leveling route (Improved Fireball, Ignite, Flame Throwing, Impact, Pyroblast, Blast Wave, Critical Mass, Fire Power, Combustion). The WoW Forever Fire tree adds two things that fit leveling well: Hot Streak, where crits with Fireball, Fire Blast and Scorch make Pyroblast up to 75% faster to cast, and a much stronger Master of Elements that refunds 30% of a spell’s base cost on every Fire or Frost crit. Impact now stuns 9% of the time, so it is a real survival talent. The build stops at 40 with Combustion: that is where the Fire tree’s leveling value tops out and where many players respec to Frost AoE for the 40s.

Why this build

  • Highest single-target damage of any mage spec at every level in this range.
  • Short fights. Mobs often die before they reach you, so you take less damage than the lack of slows suggests.
  • Impact stuns and Blast Wave’s daze give Fire its own emergency control.
  • Master of Elements refunds mana on every crit, which keeps a crit-heavy Fire build going longer than it did in Classic.

Weak spots

  • Mana hungry. Fireball and Pyroblast cost a lot; plan to drink after every one or two mobs in the 20s.
  • Little control. A second or third mob is much more dangerous than for Frost; Polymorph and Frost Nova are still your tools.
  • Fire-immune mobs (fire elementals, many demons and Blackrock creatures) force you to use Frostbolt.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10 to 40. The talent tree above shows the finished level 40 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–14 · Improved Fireball 5/5 — 0.5 sec faster Fireball at 5/5: your main filler casts much faster.
  • Levels 15–19 · Ignite 5/5 — Fire crits make the target burn for 40% of the crit’s damage over 4 sec at 5/5. Most of Fire’s damage comes from here.
  • Level 20 · Pyroblast 1/1 — A big opener with a damage-over-time effect: cast it at maximum range before the mob knows you are there.
  • Levels 21–23 · Impact 3/3 — 9% chance for Fire spells to stun for 2 sec at 3/3: extra casts and fewer hits taken.
  • Levels 24–25 · Flame Throwing 2/2 — +6 yards on Fire spells, so Pyroblast and Fireball start further away and the mob dies before it arrives.
  • Levels 26–28 · Master of Elements 3/3 — Fire and Frost crits refund 30% of their base mana cost at 3/3, which pays for a lot of Fireballs.
  • Level 29 · Hot Streak 1/1 — Crits with Fireball, Fire Blast and Scorch grant Hot Streak for 15 sec, each stack cutting Pyroblast’s cast time by 25%, up to 3 stacks.
  • Level 30 · Blast Wave 1/1 — Instant AoE Fire damage that dazes enemies for a 50% slow: your answer when two mobs reach you.
  • Levels 31–33 · Critical Mass 3/3 — +6% crit chance on Fire spells at 3/3: more Ignite, Hot Streak and Master of Elements procs.
  • Level 34 · Burning Soul 1/3 — A first point of pushback protection for Fire casts when a mob is hitting you.
  • Levels 35–39 · Fire Power 5/5 — +10% Fire damage at 5/5.
  • Level 40 · Combustion 1/1 — Each Fire hit adds 10% crit chance until 4 non-periodic Fire crits land: use it on rares and elites.

Key levels

  • Level 10 · Improved Fireball starts. Fireball is your filler; Fire Blast finishes.
  • Level 15 · Ignite begins: Fire crits leave a burn worth 40% of the crit at 5/5.
  • Level 20 · Pyroblast from the talent: open every pull with it from maximum range.
  • Level 22 · Scorch is trained: a short-cast filler whose crits also grant Hot Streak.
  • Level 26 · Master of Elements: crits refund 30% of a spell’s base mana cost at 3/3.
  • Level 29 · Hot Streak: Fireball, Fire Blast and Scorch crits stack faster Pyroblasts for 15 sec.
  • Level 30 · Blast Wave: instant AoE damage and a 50% daze when two mobs reach you.
  • Level 39 · Fire Power is full: +10% Fire damage on everything.
  • Level 40 · Combustion: guaranteed crit streaks for tough mobs, rares and elite quest targets.

How to pull and kill

  1. Buff Frost Armor or Ice Armor and Arcane Intellect. Mage Armor later if mana is your problem.
  2. Open with Pyroblast at maximum range (Flame Throwing adds 6 yards), then Fireball while the mob runs in. Hot Streak stacks make the next Pyroblast opener faster.
  3. When the mob is close, Fire Blast. If it survives, Frost Nova, step back and Fireball again.
  4. Two mobs: Polymorph one before you start. If both reach you, Blast Wave, Frost Nova and back off.
  5. On a rare or elite, pop Combustion before the Pyroblast opener so the following Fireballs and Fire Blast all crit and stack big Ignites.
  6. Wand the last few percent of health instead of spending a Fireball, and drink below half mana.

Leveling tips

  • Hit matters for Fire too. This build skips Elemental Precision, so pick quests at or below your level and wear hit gear if you find it.
  • Conjure food and water every time you train a rank. Fire drinks more than Frost does.
  • Avoid fire-immune mob types. In fire elemental or demon-heavy areas, use Frostbolt or pick a different quest.
  • Wand finisher. A wand saves an entire Fireball on almost every mob; replace it as you level.
  • Tailoring or Enchanting for your own gear; Intellect and Spirit keep the drinking breaks short.
  • Dungeons: Fire’s burst is great for killing priority targets. Shadowfang Keep, Blackfathom Deeps and Scarlet Monastery Graveyard all suit a Fire Mage in this level range.

After level 40

After 40, either keep Fire and put points into Improved Scorch, Burning Soul and Elemental Precision, or respec to the AoE Frost guide for Blizzard grinding through the 40s and 50s, which is faster when zones have open melee packs.
