The duo at a glance
Hunter & Warlock Duo for levels 10–60: two pets in front, two ranged damage dealers behind them.
This duo never needs a tank or a healer because the pets do that work. The Hunter’s beast holds the kill target, the Warlock’s Voidwalker picks up the second mob, and both players stand at range stacking damage on whatever the beast is fighting. Beast Mastery makes the Hunter’s pet a real tank and a large share of the damage; Demonology turns the Voidwalker into a second tank and, through Soul Link, into a damage sponge for the Warlock. The two classes also cover each other’s gaps: the Warlock brings Fear, Banish, Healthstones and a Soulstone, the Hunter brings Feign Death, traps and fast travel with Aspect of the Pack.
| Role | Spec | Job |
|---|---|---|
| DPS | Beast Mastery Hunter | Beast tanks the kill target, stings and shots, Intimidation on runners, Feign Death when a pull is lost |
| DPS | Demonology Warlock | Voidwalker holds the add, DoTs and Shadow Bolts, Fear, Soulstone and Healthstones |
Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.
How the hunter & warlock duo plays
- One target, two pets: the Hunter sends the beast in first and marks the target. The Warlock waits for the beast to land a few hits before Corruption, so the first mob stays glued to the beast.
- The second mob belongs to the Voidwalker: from the mid-20s the Warlock uses Searing Pain with Demonic Brand on the add, and the Voidwalker’s next attacks on it generate high threat. Before that, Torment does the same job.
- Damage order: Serpent Sting and Corruption on the kill target, then Arcane Shot, Summon Hawk and Shadow Bolts. Rotate the Warlock’s DoTs onto the add while the Hunter finishes the first mob.
- Emergency tools: Intimidation stuns a mob that runs for the Warlock, Fear removes a third mob for a few seconds, and Feign Death drops the Hunter out of a fight that is lost so the Warlock’s Soulstone can bring the duo back.
- Resting together: the Warlock’s Life Tap and Health Funnel keep both players fighting, while Spirit Bond and Mend Pet top up the beast. Drink only when both mana bars are low at the same time.
Your job as Demonology Warlock
You are the second tank through your Voidwalker and the duo’s utility player. The Hunter’s beast takes the main target; your Voidwalker takes everything else. Your damage comes from DoTs you can spread without stopping, and your survival comes from Soul Link, which sends part of the damage you take to the demon. You also carry the safety net: a Soulstone on yourself or the Hunter, Healthstones for both, Fear for a third mob and Banish for demons and elementals.
Pull by pull
- Let the beast open on the kill target, then Corruption on it once it has taken two hits.
- Send the Voidwalker to the second mob; Torment it, and from level 25 brand it with Searing Pain (Demonic Brand) so the Voidwalker’s next attacks hold it.
- Corruption and Bane of Agony on the add, then Shadow Bolt the Hunter’s target until it dies.
- If a third mob joins, Fear it and keep it away from the Hunter; a Feared mob that returns goes to the Voidwalker.
- Between pulls, Life Tap and let Demonic Energies pass the mana to your demon; Health Funnel the Voidwalker only if it is below half.
Mistakes that get the duo killed
- Putting DoTs on every mob before the pets have threat: Warlock DoTs are the easiest way for the add to find you.
- Resummoning the Voidwalker after Demonic Sacrifice without Demonic Pact; the buff is gone.
- Fearing a mob into an unpulled pack in a tight area. Use Banish on demons and elementals instead.
- Life Tapping to low health in the middle of a pull when the Hunter has no heals to give you.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Improved Corruption (Affliction) 5/5 — Shorter Corruption cast and 10% more damage: the standard first talents for every leveling Warlock.
- Levels 15–19 · Demonic Embrace 5/5 — Up to 15% more Stamina, and you have no healer.
- Levels 20–22 · Improved Voidwalker 3/3 — Stronger Torment, Consume Shadows, Sacrifice and Suffering, so the Voidwalker holds the add longer.
- Levels 23–25 · Demonic Brand 3/3 — Searing Pain causes less threat and marks the add; the pet’s next 6 attacks on it cause high threat and bonus damage. This is how the Voidwalker keeps the second mob.
- Levels 26–27 · Master Summoner 2/2 — Faster, cheaper demon summons. Also needed for Fel Domination if you want it later.
- Level 28 · Demonic Sacrifice 1/1 — Sacrifice a demon for a 2-hour buff; required for Soul Link.
- Level 29 · Fel Vitality 1/3 — More health and mana for your demon and more maximum mana for you.
- Levels 30–31 · Demonic Energies 2/2 — Your spell damage heals your demon, and Life Tap mana also goes to it: a self-sustaining Voidwalker.
- Levels 32–34 · Unholy Power 3/5 — More pet damage, which is also more Voidwalker threat.
- Level 35 · Soul Link 1/1 — 30% of the damage you take goes to your demon, and both of you deal 3% more damage.
- Levels 36–38 · Demonic Knowledge 3/3 — Extra spell damage and healing while a demon is out.
- Level 39 · Unholy Power 4/5 — finish the talent.
- Levels 40–44 · Master Demonologist 5/5 — With the Voidwalker out, you and the demon take 10% less physical damage.
- Level 45 · Demonic Pact 1/1 — Summoning a different demon no longer cancels your sacrifice buff: sacrifice the Imp for more Shadow damage, then summon the Voidwalker for Soul Link and Master Demonologist.
- Level 46 · Unholy Power 5/5 — finish the talent.
- Levels 47–48 · Fel Vitality 3/3 — finish the talent.
- Levels 49–53 · Suppression (Affliction) 5/5 — More spell hit and 20% less threat, so the pets keep their targets.
- Levels 54–58 · Malediction (Affliction) 5/5 — More damage from Corruption, Bane of Agony and your other periodic spells.
- Levels 59–60 · Improved Life Tap (Affliction) 2/2 — More mana from each Life Tap.
Where to level
Levels 10–20: finish your faction’s second zones (Westfall, Loch Modan or Darkshore for the Alliance; The Barrens or Silverpine Forest for the Horde). Named beasts and elite quest mobs are easy because two pets split the damage. Levels 20–30: Redridge Mountains, Wetlands, Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills and Shadowfang Keep (23–29) with a group. Levels 30–40: Stranglethorn Vale, Arathi Highlands, Desolace and Thousand Needles; Scarlet Monastery Graveyard (31–37) and Library (34–40) are good group runs. Levels 40–50: Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands and the Badlands, with Krol’dok Stronghold (40–55), Uldaman (44–50) and Zul’Farrak (45–51) when you find three more players. Levels 50–60: Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Burning Steppes, Western and Eastern Plaguelands and Winterspring. Banish is worth its weight in the City of Dalaran (28–33), where the dungeon chart lists demons among the enemies.
Where the duo struggles
- Two ranged players and no heals: a pull of three or four melee mobs outlasts both pets. Pull one pack at a time and Fear the extra mob early instead of hoping.
- Caster mobs ignore the pets and hit the players. Pull them around a corner so they come into melee range, or burst them with Arcane Shot and Shadow Bolt.
- Pet threat on the second mob is fragile at low levels. Until Demonic Brand, the Warlock waits two or three Torments before putting DoTs on the add.
- Deaths cost more time than in a healer duo: always keep a Soulstone on one player and Improved Revive Pet ready.
