Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.
Overview
Levels 30–60 · Survival Hunter, solo questing and grinding.
In Classic, Survival was the weakest leveling spec and the guides said so; its value was Lightning Reflexes, survivability and PvP tools. The WoW Forever Survival tree gives it a clear leveling identity. Improved Tracking adds 5% damage against whatever creature type you track, Survivalist and Surefooted make you sturdy and accurate, and a melee branch with Expose Prey and Lacerating Strikes turns Hunter’s Mark into Mongoose Bite procs when mobs reach you. This guide covers 30 to 60, when Deterrence, Counterattack and Lightning Reflexes are online and the mobs hit hard enough that Survival’s toughness pays off. The pet still tanks, and the last 14 points make it stronger through Beast Mastery.
Why this build
- Hard to kill. Survivalist health, Deterrence, Counterattack and Survivalist’s Discipline make adds and world PvP much less dangerous.
- Steady damage bonus. Improved Tracking’s 5% applies to every mob of the tracked type, and Lightning Reflexes adds 15% Agility.
- Good when mobs reach you. Expose Prey, Lacerating Strikes and Savage Strikes make melee range a place you can win, not just escape from.
- Traps on a short cooldown keep a second mob out of the fight on almost every pull.
Weak spots
- Less pet damage than Beast Mastery until the late Beast Mastery points, so single mobs die slower.
- Tracking must match. Improved Tracking only helps against the tracked creature type; switch tracking when you change targets.
- Two playstyles. Getting the most out of the build means switching between ranged and melee, which takes practice.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10 to 60. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Improved Tracking 5/5 — Up to 5% more damage against the creature type you are tracking. Switch tracking to match your quest targets.
- Levels 15–19 · Deadly Aspects (Beast Mastery) 5/5 — Aspect of the Hawk shots get a chance for 150% faster ranged attacks, from Beast Mastery.
- Levels 20–24 · Survivalist 5/5 — Up to 10% more total health.
- Levels 25–27 · Surefooted 3/3 — +3% hit chance and 15% more resistance to movement-impairing effects.
- Level 28 · Deterrence 1/1 — 25% more dodge and parry for 10 sec. Required for Counterattack.
- Levels 29–30 · Savage Strikes 2/2 — +20% critical strike chance on Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite.
- Level 31 · Counterattack 1/1 — After a parry: an unblockable strike that immobilizes the target for 5 sec, so you can step back to range.
- Levels 32–34 · Improved Wing Clip 3/3 — Up to a 12% chance for Wing Clip to root the target for 5 sec.
- Levels 35–36 · Survivalist’s Discipline 2/2 — 40% shorter trap and Deterrence cooldowns: a trap for almost every pull.
- Levels 37–38 · Resourcefulness 2/2 — Traps and melee abilities cost 60% less mana, and crits can let your mana regeneration continue while casting.
- Level 39 · Expose Prey 1/2 — Attacks on targets with your Hunter’s Mark can enable Mongoose Bite for 5 sec. Two points unlock Lacerating Strikes.
- Levels 40–44 · Lightning Reflexes 5/5 — Up to 15% more Agility: ranged damage, crit and dodge in one talent.
- Level 45 · Expose Prey 2/2 — finish the talent.
- Level 46 · Lacerating Strikes 1/1 — Mongoose Bite also makes the target bleed for 40% of the bite’s damage over 21 sec.
- Levels 47–48 · Focused Fire (Beast Mastery) 2/2 — +2% damage with all attacks while your pet is active.
- Levels 49–51 · Endurance Training (Beast Mastery) 3/5 — More pet health and armor so it holds mobs longer.
- Levels 52–56 · Unleashed Fury (Beast Mastery) 5/5 — +15% pet and hawk damage.
- Levels 57–60 · Ferocity (Beast Mastery) 4/5 — Up to 8% more pet crit chance with the last four points.
Key levels
- Level 28 · Deterrence: 25% more dodge and parry for 10 sec when something reaches you.
- Level 30 · Feign Death from the trainer; Savage Strikes makes Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite crit more.
- Level 31 · Counterattack: an unblockable strike after a parry that roots the target for 5 sec.
- Level 36 · Survivalist’s Discipline: shorter trap and Deterrence cooldowns.
- Level 40 · Lightning Reflexes starts: up to 15% more Agility. Mail armor and your mount.
- Level 46 · Lacerating Strikes: Mongoose Bite also leaves a bleed.
- Level 56 · Unleashed Fury complete: 15% more pet and hawk damage.
How to pull and kill
- Track the right type. Before a quest area, switch tracking to the creature type you will kill most for Improved Tracking’s bonus.
- Pet first, Hunter’s Mark, then Serpent Sting and Auto Shot. Hunter’s Mark also enables Expose Prey’s Mongoose Bite procs if the mob comes to you.
- Trap the second mob before pulling; Survivalist’s Discipline makes traps ready again for most pulls.
- When a mob reaches you, do not run: Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite when it procs, Counterattack after a parry, then Wing Clip and step back once it is rooted.
- Big pulls: Deterrence as they arrive, then Feign Death if the pet cannot pick them back up.
Leveling tips
- Keep a strong two-handed melee weapon with Agility. Predator’s Edge is not in this build, but Raptor Strike, Mongoose Bite and Lacerating Strikes still use your melee weapon.
- Stack Agility. Lightning Reflexes multiplies it, and Agility gives ranged attack power, crit and dodge at the same time.
- Tracking by zone: Humanoids in Stranglethorn Vale and Tanaris camps, Beasts in Feralas and Un’Goro, Undead in the Plaguelands, Demons in Felwood.
- Zones: Arathi Highlands, Desolace and Stranglethorn Vale for 30–40, Tanaris, Feralas and the Hinterlands for 40–50, and Un’Goro, Felwood, Winterspring and the Plaguelands for 50–60.
- Dungeons: Razorfen Downs (38–44), Uldaman (44–50), Maraudon (48–54) and Blackrock Depths (52–60) suit a Hunter who can survive a loose mob.
- Skinning and Leatherworking give Agility leather and armor kits as you level.
- Feed your pet and keep ammo stocked, exactly like any other Hunter: the pet still tanks most pulls.
After level 60
At 60, Survival works well for world PvP and solo farming. For dungeons, move the Beast Mastery points into Marksmanship for Trueshot Aura, or respec using the Marksmanship Hunter leveling guide as a starting point.
