Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

The duo at a glance

Warlock & Priest Duo for levels 15–40: an Affliction Warlock and a Shadow Priest stacking damage over time.

Two DoT casters kill mobs without ever standing still for long: every mob gets Corruption, Bane of Agony and Shadow Word: Pain, the Voidwalker holds them, and the two casters channel Drain Life and Mind Flay while the damage ticks. The Priest is the safety valve. Power Word: Shield and Renew stop the rare burst, Vampiric Embrace heals the whole party from Shadow damage, and Spirit Tap plus the Warlock’s drains keep both mana bars high enough to chain pull. At level 40 the Priest reaches Shadowform and the Warlock reaches Drain Hope, and the duo finishes this stretch at its strongest.

Role Spec Job
DPS Affliction Warlock Voidwalker tanks, DoTs on every mob, drains for health and mana, Fear on the extra mob
DPS Shadow Priest Shadow Word: Pain and Mind Flay, shields and Renew on whoever is hit, Vampiric Embrace for group healing

Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.

How the warlock & priest duo plays

  1. The Voidwalker is the tank: the Warlock sends it in first and Torments. Both casters open with instant spells only after it has hit the mob twice.
  2. Split the DoTs: the Warlock puts Corruption and Bane of Agony on every mob in the pull, the Priest adds Shadow Word: Pain to the same mobs and Mind Blasts the one the Voidwalker is tanking.
  3. Channel, don’t cast: the Warlock channels Drain Life or Drain Soul on the lowest mob, the Priest channels Mind Flay on the tanked mob. Channels keep the duo’s health and mana up while the DoTs finish the work.
  4. Shields on the one being hit: Power Word: Shield on the Voidwalker or on whichever caster pulled aggro, then Renew. In Shadowform the Priest cannot heal, so drop the form only when a real heal is needed.
  5. Spirit Tap chain: the Warlock finishes mobs with Drain Soul, the Priest lands a kill with Mind Blast when possible, and both start the next pull while the kill buffs are running.

Your job as Affliction Warlock

You set the pace of the duo. Your Voidwalker is the tank, your DoTs are most of the damage, and your drains make sure you rarely drink. The Priest can shield and heal you, so you can afford longer pulls than a solo Warlock, but only if the Voidwalker holds threat. Suppression and Fel Concentration are here for exactly that: less threat from your DoTs and channels that damage does not interrupt.

Pull by pull

  • Voidwalker in, Torment, then Corruption on the main target and Bane of Agony once the Priest has added Shadow Word: Pain.
  • Put Corruption on the second mob and send it to the Voidwalker as well; Fear it if a third one arrives.
  • Siphon Life on the tougher mob from level 31, then Drain Life on whichever mob has the most DoTs for the biggest Improved Drains bonus.
  • Switch to Drain Soul when a mob drops low: the kill grants Soul Harvest and a Soul Shard.
  • From level 40, Drain Hope on elites and bosses to speed up every DoT on them.

Mistakes that get the duo killed

  • Spreading DoTs before the Voidwalker has a single Torment on the pack.
  • Drain Life on a mob with no DoTs on it: Improved Drains gains nothing.
  • Life Tapping at low health because the Priest will fix it; their mana pays for your Life Tap.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 40 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–14 · Improved Corruption 5/5 — Shorter Corruption cast and 10% more damage, the first talents of every leveling Warlock.
  • Levels 15–16 · Improved Life Tap 2/2 — More mana per Life Tap; with a Priest to heal you, Life Tap turns into mana almost for free.
  • Levels 17–20 · Suppression 4/5 — More spell hit and less threat, so the Voidwalker keeps the pack off you and the Priest.
  • Levels 21–22 · Soul Harvesting 2/2 — Killing a mob with Drain Soul gives 20 sec of strong mana regeneration, even while casting.
  • Levels 23–25 · Improved Drains 3/3 — Drain Life and Drain Soul hit harder for each of your other Affliction effects on the target; Drain Soul gets the bonus tripled on low mobs.
  • Levels 26–28 · Fel Concentration 3/3 — Damage rarely interrupts your drains when a mob slips through.
  • Levels 29–30 · Nightfall 2/2 — Corruption and drains can make your next Shadow Bolt instant.
  • Level 31 · Siphon Life 1/1 — A DoT that heals you: health you do not need the Priest for.
  • Levels 32–34 · Soul Siphon 3/3 — Drains deal damage 51% faster. It cuts Drain Life healing by 30%, which the Priest’s heals and Vampiric Embrace cover easily in this duo.
  • Levels 35–39 · Shadow Mastery 5/5 — +5% Shadow damage to every DoT and drain.
  • Level 40 · Drain Hope 1/1 — A short channel that deals heavy Shadow damage and makes your other Shadow DoTs 10% stronger on that target: the elite and boss button.

Where to level

Levels 15–20: The Barrens, Westfall, Silverpine Forest or Darkshore. Ruins of Lordaeron (15–20), Ragefire Chasm (13–19) and Hall of Thanes (13–18) are the first dungeons on this site’s chart; a DoT duo can join any group there as damage. Levels 20–30: Hillsbrad Foothills, Ashenvale, Redridge Mountains and Wetlands. Wailing Caverns (19–25) and The Deadmines (18–24) come first, then Shadowfang Keep (23–29) and Blackfathom Deeps (25–31). Levels 30–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Thousand Needles; Scarlet Monastery Graveyard (31–37) and Library (34–40), and The Drowned City (35–40) for trolls, naga and pirates off the Stranglethorn coast. Humanoid casters in that dungeon are where Silence earns its point.

Where the duo struggles

  • Fast melee packs reach the casters before the DoTs have done anything. Pull with Fear on the second mob and Psychic Scream as the last resort, not the first.
  • Bosses and elites outlast Voidwalker threat. Use Sacrifice’s shield and Power Word: Shield in turn instead of both at once.
  • Undead and elementals are fine, but mobs that are immune to Fear or Shadow effects are much slower to kill.
  • Shadow Weaving in WoW Forever only raises the Priest’s own Shadow damage, so do not expect it to boost the Warlock as it did in Classic.
