The duo at a glance
Druid & Hunter Duo for levels 40–60: a Beast Mastery Hunter whose pet tanks and a Balance Druid who roots, nukes and heals the pet.
Hunters are the strongest solo levelers in Classic, and their limit is the pet: a pet that tanks two elites or a pack dies, and the Hunter has no way to heal it quickly. A Balance Druid fills that gap. The pet holds the mobs, the Hunter and Druid kill them from range, Entangling Roots holds the extras, and the Druid keeps both the pet and the Hunter topped up with Rejuvenation and Regrowth. Nobody in the duo needs to get hit, so downtime is almost zero, and Moonkin Form at 40 adds 3% crit for both of you and armor for the rare mob that reaches them. This duo works for Alliance (Night Elf) and Horde (Tauren) and is built for 40–60, when Moonkin Form, Bestial Wrath and the long open-world zones come together.
| Role | Spec | Job |
|---|---|---|
| DPS | Balance Druid | Moonfire, Wrath and Starfire from range, roots the extras, heals the pet and the Hunter between swings |
| DPS | Beast Mastery Hunter | Pet tanks every pull, Auto Shot and Serpent Sting damage, Intimidation and Bestial Wrath on elites |
Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.
How the druid & hunter duo plays
- The pet opens. The Hunter sends the pet in and lets it Growl twice before shooting. The Druid waits for the first Auto Shot before casting.
- Kill from range. The Hunter uses Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot and Auto Shot; the Druid opens with Moonfire and Insect Swarm, then Wrath to build Eclipse charges and Starfire to spend them.
- Root the extras. When a second or third mob joins, the Druid roots it. With Overgrowth, Entangling Roots holds up to three targets, and Improved Entangling Roots stops roots from breaking on the first hit.
- Heal the pet, not yourself. Rejuvenation on the pet at the start of every multi-mob pull; the Hunter’s Mend Pet and Spirit Bond cover the rest. The Druid must leave Moonkin Form to heal.
- Burst on elites. Bestial Wrath and the Druid’s Nature’s Grace crit chain kill an elite before the pet runs out of health.
Your job as Balance Druid
You are the Hunter’s second damage dealer and the pet’s healer. From range, your job is to add damage to the pet’s target, root anything that joins, and keep the pet alive with heals before it gets low. The Forever Balance tree changes how you level: Improved Wrath halves Wrath’s mana cost, Eclipse makes each Wrath speed up your next Starfires, Nature’s Splendor lengthens Moonfire, Rejuvenation and Regrowth, and Overgrowth lets you root up to three mobs. Moonkin Form at 40 gives the party 3% crit and a lot of armor, but you cannot heal while in it, so you shift out for heals and back in for damage.
Pull by pull
- Mark of the Wild and Thorns on the pet; Moonkin Form before the pull.
- Wait for the pet’s Growl and the Hunter’s first shot, then Moonfire and Insect Swarm on the pet’s target.
- Wrath to build Eclipse charges, then Starfire; Nature’s Grace crits speed up the next cast.
- When an extra mob comes, Entangling Roots on it before it reaches the Hunter.
- When the pet drops below 60%, leave Moonkin Form, Rejuvenation or Regrowth, and shift back in.
Mistakes that get the duo killed
- Casting Starfire before the pet has threat: your crits pull the mob onto a cloth-armored Druid.
- Staying in Moonkin Form while the pet dies because shifting out feels slow.
- Rooting the pet’s target: it stops moving but keeps attacking the pet, and roots break on damage anyway.
- Spamming Starfire at low mana. Wrath and Moonfire are your low-mana damage.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Improved Wrath 5/5 — Half-price Wrath with a 0.5 sec shorter cast: your mana-efficient damage for the whole range.
- Levels 15–16 · Nature’s Reach 2/2 — 20% more range on Balance spells and +4% hit, so you can stand behind the Hunter and still hit.
- Levels 17–18 · Improved Moonfire 2/2 — +10% Moonfire damage and crit chance; it also unlocks Vengeance.
- Levels 19–20 · Nature’s Majesty 2/2 — +4% crit with spells: more Nature’s Grace procs.
- Level 21 · Nature’s Splendor 1/1 — Longer Moonfire, Rejuvenation and Regrowth, so one heal on the pet lasts the whole fight.
- Levels 22–24 · Improved Entangling Roots 3/3 — +75% root damage, and the root survives far more damage before breaking: your extra mobs stay put.
- Level 25 · Insect Swarm 1/1 — A Nature damage over time that also lowers the mob’s chance to hit the pet.
- Levels 26–30 · Improved Starfire 5/5 — 0.5 sec faster Starfire with a chance to stun the target.
- Level 31 · Nature’s Grace 1/1 — Spell crits speed up your next casts and your global cooldown for 3 sec.
- Levels 32–34 · Eclipse 3/3 — Forever talent: each Wrath makes your next two Starfires cast 0.5 sec faster, up to four charges. Wrath, Wrath, Starfire, Starfire.
- Levels 35–39 · Moonfury 5/5 — +5% Arcane and Nature damage on every spell you cast.
- Level 40 · Moonkin Form 1/1 — Big armor, 3% party crit and freedom from roots and slows when you shift. You cannot heal inside it.
- Levels 41–45 · Vengeance 5/5 — +20% critical strike damage for Arcane and Nature spells.
- Levels 46–50 · Genesis 5/5 — +5% periodic damage and healing: Moonfire, Insect Swarm, Rejuvenation and Regrowth on the pet.
- Levels 51–52 · Overgrowth 2/2 — Entangling Roots can hold two more targets at once: root three extra mobs while the pet tanks one.
- Levels 53–57 · Balance of Nature 5/5 — Alternating Nature and Arcane spells makes the next one hit harder. Wrath into Starfire does this naturally.
- Levels 58–60 · Nature’s Focus (Restoration) 3/5 — Restoration tree: damage is less likely to interrupt your Nature and Arcane casts, for the mob that reaches you.
Where to level
40–50: Tanaris, Feralas, the Hinterlands, Stranglethorn Vale and the Swamp of Sorrows. Beast-heavy areas suit this duo: the Druid can Hibernate an extra beast and the Hunter can tame a better pet. Krol’dok Stronghold (40–55), Uldaman (44–50), Zul’Farrak (45–51), Alcaz Prison (48–53) and Maraudon (48–54) are the dungeon breaks; in a group the Druid can switch to healing. 50–55: Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Azshara and Searing Gorge. Un’Goro’s beasts and dinosaurs are ideal for pet tanking and Hibernate. Sunken Temple (52–58) and Blackrock Depths (52–60) are long dungeons to fill a group for. 55–60: Winterspring, Western and Eastern Plaguelands, Burning Steppes and Silithus. Dire Maul East (55–60), Blackmaw Hold (55–60) and Lower Blackrock Spire (57–60) end the run.
Where the duo struggles
- Druid mana is the first thing to run out: Starfire is expensive, and healing costs more. Improved Wrath halves Wrath’s cost, so lean on Wrath and Moonfire when mana is low.
- Mobs that ignore the pet (casters that turn to the Druid, fleeing humanoids) break the pattern. Concussive Shot and Wing Clip slow them, the Druid roots them.
- Undead and elementals cannot be Hibernated, and some resist roots. Pull those one at a time.
- Pet threat on big pulls is weaker than a real tank. Keep the Druid’s damage on the pet’s target and let Intimidation and Bestial Wrath build threat first.
