Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The group plan follows how cleave groups played in Classic, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

The group at a glance

Spell Cleave for levels 15–40: a Protection Paladin, three Frost Mages and a Holy Priest.

Spell cleave trades single-target power for very large pulls. The Paladin gathers several packs and holds them in Consecration, three Frost Mages keep the whole pack slowed inside overlapping Blizzards, and the Priest keeps the Paladin standing. Nothing is killed one by one: the pack melts together, and the group moves straight on to the next one.

Role Spec Job in the pull
Tank Protection Paladin Gathers packs, holds them in Consecration, taunts runners back with Judgement
DPS Frost Mage Blizzard on the tank, first Frost Nova when a mob breaks
DPS Frost Mage Blizzard, holds the second Frost Nova
DPS Frost Mage Blizzard, Cone of Cold on low mobs from level 30
Healer Holy Priest Keeps the Paladin alive, Holy Nova when mages take splash damage

Every spec in the table links to its own guide with talents for that slot.

How the spell cleave plays

  1. Before Blizzard (Classic trains it at level 20): play a normal group. The Paladin pulls one or two packs, the mages Frostbolt the kill target and use Frost Nova on anything that runs for them. Treat these levels as practice for positioning.
  2. From Improved Blizzard on: the Paladin gathers two or three packs and stops in a corner or doorway so the mobs stack on one spot. Consecration goes down first.
  3. Stagger the damage: the first mage starts Blizzard after two Consecration ticks, the other two follow one after another. Frost Channeling cuts Frost threat by 30%, but three mages at once still pull aggro from a fresh tank.
  4. Freeze rotation: only one mage uses Frost Nova at a time. Mage 1 novas when a mob breaks towards the casters, mage 2 holds theirs for the next break, mage 3 finishes low mobs with Cone of Cold from level 30.
  5. Drink together: the whole group drinks after every one or two big pulls. A half-mana mage team cannot finish a large pack, and a pack that survives is how spell cleave wipes.

Your job as Holy Priest

In spell cleave you mostly heal one target: the Paladin who holds everything. The mages take damage only when a mob breaks loose, and that is when Holy Nova shines, because its damage and healing cause no threat. Your mana decides when the group pulls, so say it early.

Pull by pull

  • Renew on the Paladin as they start gathering, before the first hit.
  • Stand at maximum range behind the mages, with line of sight to the tank.
  • Heal the Paladin with efficient heals; save your big heal for Templar’s Bulwark running out.
  • When two or more mages take splash damage, step closer and Holy Nova: it causes no threat.
  • Drink after every one or two big pulls, even if you still have half your mana.

Mistakes that wipe the group

  • Healing mages to full during the pull: stray heals on casters pull mobs off the Paladin.
  • Standing inside Blizzard range of the pack where breaking mobs reach you first.
  • Waiting for the tank to drop low before casting a slow heal.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 40 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–12 · Improved Renew 3/3 — +15% Renew healing: your pre-pull heal on the Paladin.
  • Levels 13–14 · Twilight Focus 2/3 — 70% chance that damage does not interrupt your casts when a mob slips through to you.
  • Levels 15–19 · Divine Fury 5/5 — 0.5 sec faster Heal and Greater Heal.
  • Level 20 · Holy Nova 1/1 — Damages enemies and heals party members within 10 yards, and neither effect causes threat.
  • Levels 21–23 · Inspiration 3/3 — Critical heals give the target 25% more armor for 15 sec.
  • Level 24 · Twilight Focus 3/3 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 25–27 · Improved Healing 3/3 — Cheaper Lesser Heal, Heal and Greater Heal.
  • Levels 28–29 · Holy Reach 2/2 — Longer Smite range and a larger Prayer of Healing radius for spread-out mages.
  • Levels 30–34 · Spiritual Guidance 5/5 — Healing power from Spirit.
  • Levels 35–37 · Spiritual Healing 3/3 — +9% healing.
  • Level 38 · Spirit of Redemption 1/1 — Keep casting free heals for 15 sec after dying: often enough to finish an overpull.
  • Level 39 · Litany of Light 1/2 — Mana back when you alternate between different heals.
  • Level 40 · Prayer of Mending 1/1 — A heal that jumps to the next party member who takes damage, up to 5 times.

Use Hall of Thanes and Ruins of Lordaeron to learn the pull rhythm with small groups. The cleave gets strong once all three mages have Improved Blizzard, so plan your longest dungeon sessions from the mid-20s. The Excavation Site in the Wetlands is full of Titan constructs; pull a single construct first and check whether chills and Frost Nova hold it before gathering a whole room.

Where the group struggles

  • Casters that stay at range do not stack into Blizzard. The Paladin breaks line of sight around a corner so they walk into the pack.
  • Bosses are single target. Mages switch to Frostbolt, the Paladin keeps the boss turned away, and the Priest heals efficiently instead of spamming.
  • Mana is the limit of every pull. Skip a pack rather than start one at half mana.
  • Immune or fear-heavy mobs break the model. Kill them first with normal single-target play.
