The duo at a glance
Shaman & Warrior Duo for levels 30–60: an Arms Warrior who never stops swinging and a Restoration Shaman behind him.
The classic Horde answer to the Warrior’s hardest problem. A solo Warrior loses health on every pull and spends half the time eating; with a Restoration Shaman behind him, he pulls two or three mobs, gains Rage from the hits and never has to stop. The Shaman keeps him alive with Healing Wave, Riptide and totems, adds Strength of Earth or Windfury Totem for more damage, and casts Lightning Bolts when there is nothing to heal. From level 30 Arms has Sweeping Strikes, from 40 Mortal Strike, and the duo turns into a cleave machine that also runs dungeons with three more players.
| Role | Spec | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Healer | Restoration Shaman | Totems before each pull, keeps the Warrior alive with Healing Wave and Riptide, Lightning Bolts when idle |
| DPS | Arms Warrior | Charges two or three mobs, Sweeping Strikes and Mortal Strike, holds threat off the Shaman |
Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.
How the shaman & warrior duo plays
- Warrior pulls, Shaman places: the Shaman drops Strength of Earth (or Windfury Totem from level 32 in Classic) and Healing Stream Totem at the fight spot, then the Warrior Charges the pack.
- Two or three mobs at a time: Rend on everything, Sweeping Strikes, then Overpower, Mortal Strike and Cleave. The Warrior takes all the damage and turns it into Rage.
- Efficient heals only: the Shaman heals with Healing Wave ranks that fit the damage, keeps Riptide on the Warrior from level 45, and lets Healing Stream Totem cover the small hits.
- Damage while idle: when the Warrior is above 70% health, the Shaman uses Lightning Bolt or Earth Shock on a caster. Natural Grace keeps the extra threat low.
- Emergencies: Nature’s Swiftness into a big Healing Wave, Mana Tide Totem when a long chain empties the Shaman, and Reincarnation if everything else fails.
Your job as Arms Warrior
With a healer behind you, being hit is no longer a cost: it is Rage. Pull two or three mobs, keep them all on you, and kill them together with Sweeping Strikes, Cleave and bleeds. Your second job is threat: the Shaman’s heals are split across every mob you fight, so tag each mob with Rend or Cleave early and Taunt anything that walks towards the Shaman. Enrage from the Fury tree pays off here, because you take critical hits on almost every pull.
Pull by pull
- Wait for the Shaman’s totems, then Charge the first mob of a two or three mob group.
- Rend on every mob, Demoralizing Shout if they hit hard, then Sweeping Strikes.
- Mortal Strike and Overpower (Bloodthrill procs on Rended targets) on the main target, Cleave with spare Rage.
- If a mob turns towards the Shaman, Taunt it back in Defensive Stance or Intimidating Shout the pack.
- Execute low mobs, then move straight to the next group if the Shaman has mana; bandage while they drink.
Mistakes that get the duo killed
- Pulling a fourth mob because the Shaman is healing well: their mana, not your health, is the limit.
- Letting a caster stand at range and hit the Shaman.
- Charging before the totems are down, which drags the fight away from Healing Stream Totem.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–12 · Improved Rend 3/3 — Stronger Rend bleeds; you put Rend on every mob in the pull. Required for Deep Wounds.
- Levels 13–14 · Deflection 2/5 — More parry while you take every hit.
- Levels 15–16 · Improved Charge 2/2 — More Rage from Charge to open with Rend and Sweeping Strikes.
- Levels 17–18 · Improved Overpower 2/2 — Overpower crits far more often, which also triggers Deep Wounds.
- Level 19 · Improved Heroic Strike 1/3 — Cheaper Heroic Strike to spend the extra Rage from being healed.
- Levels 20–22 · Deep Wounds 3/3 — Critical strikes make the target bleed for more damage on every mob you hit.
- Levels 23–24 · Improved Heroic Strike 3/3 — finish the talent.
- Levels 25–27 · Two-Handed Weapon Specialization 3/3 — +3% damage with a two-handed weapon.
- Levels 28–29 · Impale 2/2 — Bigger critical strikes from your abilities.
- Level 30 · Sweeping Strikes 1/1 — Your next 5 attacks also hit a second mob: the reason to pull more than one.
- Levels 31–35 · Weaponmaster 5/5 — A bonus based on your weapon: crit with axes and polearms, armor penetration with maces and staves, extra attacks with swords.
- Levels 36–39 · Bloodthrill 4/5 — Attacks on Rended targets can enable Overpower, so keep Rend on the main target.
- Level 40 · Mortal Strike 1/1 — Your hardest-hitting attack on cooldown.
- Level 41 · Bloodthrill 5/5 — finish the talent.
- Levels 42–46 · Cruelty (Fury) 5/5 — +5% melee critical strike chance.
- Levels 47–51 · Unbridled Wrath (Fury) 5/5 — Extra Rage from melee hits for more Cleaves.
- Levels 52–54 · Improved Cleave (Fury) 3/3 — Much stronger Cleave for two and three mob pulls.
- Levels 55–56 · Blood Craze (Fury) 2/3 — Health regeneration after being critically hit, which eases the Shaman’s healing on big pulls.
- Levels 57–60 · Enrage (Fury) 4/5 — More melee damage after you are critically hit, which happens on almost every multi-mob pull.
Where to level
Levels 30–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Thousand Needles. Razorfen Kraul (30–36), the Scarlet Monastery wings (Graveyard 31–37, Library 34–40, Armory 37–43) and The Drowned City (35–40) are all good group runs for this duo as healer plus melee. Levels 40–50: Dustwallow Marsh, Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands and the Badlands. Krol’dok Stronghold (40–55), Uldaman (44–50) and Zul’Farrak (45–51) cover the whole range. Levels 50–60: Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Azshara, Burning Steppes, Winterspring and the Plaguelands, with Alcaz Prison (48–53), Maraudon (48–54), Sunken Temple (52–58) and Blackrock Depths (52–60). At 55+ Dire Maul East and Blackmaw Hold (both 55–60) are the last stops before the level 60 dungeons.
Where the duo struggles
- Casters at range do not come to the Warrior. Pull them around a corner or have the Shaman Earth Shock the cast.
- Large packs outheal the Shaman’s mana. Three mobs is the comfortable limit before Mana Tide Totem; skip the fourth.
- The Shaman is not a tank: if heal threat pulls a mob, the Warrior needs to Taunt in Defensive Stance or Intimidating Shout. Agree who handles it before the pull.
- Downtime lives on the Shaman’s mana bar. Drink when the Shaman drinks, and the Warrior bandages instead of asking for heals between pulls.
